The EBS NEXT WAVE™ technology uses pulsed electrical stimulations of low-currents which are applied by electrodes. After the patient´s individual EEG patterns are measured, trains of biphasic and low-level currents are applied at a frequency and current strength individualized on the patient. The repetitive stimulation leads to synchronous firing of neuronal networks, release of neurotrophic factors in the deafferented brain regions and thus enhances synaptic transmission through “long-term potentiation” (LTP). Synaptic function in residual brain areas that managed to survive the injury are thus permanently strengthened, leading to significant recovery of function.
Because LTP is the well known neurobiological basis of learning, EBS has “training-like” effects which are more rapid than e.g. physical training. The low-risk EBS therapy cycle covers 10 therapy sessions with a duration of 40 minutes each.
The neuronal network of the brain responds as a whole to the EBS treatment and effects are therefore not restricted to certain circumscribed brain areas. These more “non-specific” network changes might also benefit other neurological functions.
The treatment is painless and without known adverse side effects.
